Tell us about yourself and your background.
I’ve dedicated my career to solving complex problems through the power of modern software. We’re in an amazing time period of innovation and change with software products becoming easier to use, more accessible, and more affordable. I’m proud to be involved with a number of companies driving this change and my goal is to spend the next several decades building ZenPayroll to it’s full potential.
Prior to co-founding ZenPayroll, I was the CEO & Co-Founder of Unwap (acquired in 2010), which created the Buzzeo Social Application Platform. I previously served as a product manager at Zazzle and I received my BS & MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
What does your company do and what problem does it solve for small businesses?
ZenPayroll is modern, delightful cloud-based payroll software that enables customers to quickly and easily pay their employees. ZenPayroll automates the process of calculating and paying taxes, completing all payroll government filings and direct deposit. It’s a comprehensive service that’s very simple, secure, and easy to use. A small business owner doesn’t have to be an expert to use the product and our goal is to save them time & money, so they can focus on growing their business.
In 2012, businesses were fined over $5 billion in payroll penalties according to the IRS. The payroll market today is filled with unnecessary layers of complexity, manual tasks, and numerous fees. Companies deserve better and that’s why we built ZenPayroll—to provide easy to use, paperless, secure and affordable payroll to businesses everywhere.
We also offer ZenPayroll For Accountants, which gives CPAs and bookkeepers the ability to manage dozens of companies from a free, centralized dashboard. Setting up a new company is very quick and we’re excited to empower these independent service providers with modern software.
How did you come up with the idea for your company?
Our inspiration for starting ZenPayroll was the pain we had felt from using existing payroll systems with our previous companies. We were shocked by how antiquated many of the products were and we knew that we could build a better solution. We built a team of incredible software engineers, designers and payroll compliance experts, who shared our passion for helping small businesses. Since our launch, we’ve processed tens of millions of dollars in payroll for our customers, and we’re expanding quickly.
What makes your company different from your competitors?
Payroll is something that every company must deal with and for most businesses, it’s a major pain point. There hasn’t been any innovation in payroll for decades and as a result, current solutions are overly complex and unnecessarily expensive. By leveraging modern software, we’ve been able to build a product that is faster, easier to use and more affordable than any other product on the market. Our customers love it because it saves them time and it saves them money. There’s no training required and set-up takes minutes.
What are the most important considerations small businesses should have when choosing technology to help them power their business?
Given the wide variety of products available, it’s important that each tool a small business chooses is solving a real problem for their business. It’s easy to waste time buying products that ultimately aren’t used. When choosing a technology product, make sure it is:
- Intuitive & easy to use—the product should do what it says and not require hours of training.
- Secure—make sure your data is kept safe.
- Cloud-based & mobile—you should be able to access the product when you want, where you want.
What other companies or entrepreneurs within the technology space do you admire and think small businesses should know about?
I have a great deal of respect and admiration for many of the CEO’s who invested in ZenPayroll. Drew Houston from Dropbox has built an elegant product that solves a real problem. Jeremy Stoppelman from Yelp has taken his business from ideation all the way to being a public company. We raised money from these individuals because they are committed to building long-lasting businesses.
